In a whirlwind of red leaves, Little Red confronts the themes of metamorphoses and rites of passage hidden in the well-known fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood.
A child observes a red leaf floating in the wind, then the number of leaves increases surrounding her in a whirlwind to which she gives in, allowing it to cover her entirely. Thus dressed, we can finally recognise her: she’s Little Red Riding Hood. This poetical and original version of the well-known fairy tale focuses on its three essential moments: guided by the protagonist’s magnetic look, the reader witnesses her transformation, until she confronts a white mask that falls down after the game of questions, revealing the wolf. Finally, the reader sees Little Red’s revenge and liberation, which here takes on the meaning of blooming and rebirth.
By focusing on the theme of metamorphosis, developed in the three sections of the book, Beatriz Martín Vidal brings to light the theme of the rite of passage hidden in the plot of this beloved tale, be it a passage to puberty, adult age or simply to a better understanding of oneself and the world. The fast-moving illustrations, painted in dark neutral tones where the red leaves, the white mask and the wolf’s yellow eyes stand out, seem to come alive page after page, as if in a refined flipbook to flip through impatiently until the end, only to come back and observe its charming details.
